I just heard on the radio that Renee “Bee-Stung Face” Zellweger will play Janis Joplin in an upcoming ‘epic‘ about Janis’ life.

I am fucking fit to be fucking tied.

You know I like Renee. I don’t think she deserves an Oscar anytime soon, but Janis Joplin? I can’t even fathom the thought!

What next? Britney Spears playing Sinead O’Connor on the big screen? Bleh!

  5. melly 6.21.2003

They only picked her because she’s from Texas. They think we’re all alike. Personally, I think I could have done a much better job. I’m from Texas, what the fuck?

  6. Kate S. 6.21.2003

Oh my freaking rock goddess. I agree. This news makes me want to hurt…er, I mean: hurl.

  7. John 6.21.2003

    Puff Daddy as Jimi Hendrix.

    Eminem as Frank Sinatra

    Madonna as Evita….ummm

    AHHH!

    You had me at Bleh.

  8. KC 6.21.2003

Ugh…i never thought that making movies about real people was too good an idea anyway.

  9. delmer 6.21.2003

funny that nobody mentioned how absurd it was that val kilmer should play jim morrison.

I have no use for any of the actors or musicians mentioned…but what the hell, I mean can zellwiger do any worse of a job fucking up her represenation of joplin’s life any more than joplin screwed up her own exsistence?

All tongue in but cheek comments aside, why not give it a chance? if it’s horrible it will be quickly forgotten, if it’s a masterpiece it will do credit to the woman’s memory.

FIRST AND FOREMOST, I’D LIKE TO THANK IRELAND FOR ASSING UP THE COMMENTS WINDOW!…even though that was a fucking funny little comment there, Manic ole boy.

Look! cal felt it so hard that she had to say it twice-like!

Maria: I dug her in Empire Records. If she’d've stuck to roles like that (irreverent whorey types), I’d still hold a passing affection for her. Okay, she was good in ‘Bridget Jones’, as well.

melly: You SO could. We need to start a campaign. Like, NOW. You should get likkered up and call me tonight so’s we can discuss it.

John: That ‘you had me at bleh’ line is testament to why I like you so fucking much.

KC: Are you fucking kidding me? Have you not seen ‘The Right Stuff’? I LOVELOVELOVE that movie!

del: because Kilmer, at least, had a good body of work behind him and a proven track record as an actor. Plus he’s a horribly self-aggrandizing dick IRL; haven’t you ever heard the rule that you have to BE larger-than-life to PLAY someone larger-than-life? Plus, he did a bang-up fucking job of playing the Lizard King, vocals and all.

Zellweger, little to no versatility (she went to the Pacino school of acting, I spose), little to no living behind her. My wager is that an unknown junkie off the street would be more fitting.

Or melly, damnit. melly could SO play Joplin believably.

Does anyone know–did Janis laugh like Butthead?

oops. I went to refresh the window but forgot it was when I posted it. So now you got to “hear” me twice! :/

  13. Maria 6.21.2003

Speaking of Pacino… I am currently watching Scent of a Woman. You are so right. He really does have no versatility. While I do like him in some roles, he really doesn’t play any of them differently… well Scent of a Woman is more like Scarface on lithium. :)

As for Renee, I saw Down With Love (don’t ask, it wasn’t my first choice… okay it wasn’t even my 5th choice). I love the movie for the campy way they played the kinda Cary Grant/Doris Day kinda flick to the hilt, but within 20 minutes, Renee’s voice could have sent me to the nearest Walmart return desk to empty out my revolver!

And yeah… loved her in empire records. But I think I love that movie as an ensemble not because of Renee’s performance.

Even with Jerry Maguire, I was still okay with her. Even liked her in Bridget Jones, but a nomination for an Oscar? Puhleeze!

  14. Jennifer 6.21.2003

Once upon a time, Melissa Etheridge was going to do a Joplin movie – she was going to sing the music too. I’ve heard her renditions of some of Joplin’s songs, and they’re not bad. I’m not a big Joplin fan, so I liked Etheridge’s stuff better, but… she’d have been FAR better than Zellweger. What were they thinking?

  15. delmer 6.22.2003

please don’t mistake this as any form of endorsement of renee z.

ok so back in the day when you first heard that kilmer would be playing morrison you said “what a perfect choice!”???

also, if you pull up IMDB, zellwigers body of work is much much larger than kilmers were when he landed the role.

eh….it’s acting. give the girl a chance. It might blow, it might go….either way in 20 years pretty much nobody will give a tinkers damn about it.

  16. Jettomatika 6.22.2003

del, notice I said ‘good’, not ‘large’.

and yes, when I heard that Kilmer would be playing that part, I was suitably intrigued.

  17. delmer 6.22.2003

yea, as much as i loved him in ‘top gun’ you can’t beat the job he did in ‘willow’.

eh, in 50 years of none of it will matter, joplin and morrison will be as an obscure reference as marion harris and paul whiteman.

  18. Sean 6.23.2003

Kilmer’s best role EVER was Doc Holiday… OMG he had the most awesome line delivery.

  19. Angel 6.23.2003

When you find Zellweger completely irritating, hearing something like Zellweger to play Joplin, you pretty much think it’s gonna be horrible. So then you rage and say “No Way”. You don’t give it a chance if you have either not liked or barely tolerate her in other roles.

  20. April Love 6.24.2003

I AM APPALLED!!!!!!!!!! No one with a whiny, high pitched voice can play my Janice! NO NO NO! I’m not havin’ it!

  21. Sean 6.25.2003

please, it could be worse… it could be jennifer tilly….
