Jett Superior laid this on you on || August 28, 2003 || 11:03 pm

I’ve an idea for a project! woo!

It may just be stupid, but I’m interested to see what comes out of it.

Use those comments down there or send me an e-mail, I don’t care, but I want you to list one song for each category, and maybe even suggest more categories:

What’s your favorite ‘do-me’ song?

Which song buoys you up/inspires you?

Which song evokes the ‘big wallow’ (heartbreak, regret, longing, all that hooey) in you?

When you rage, what’s the musical accompaniment?

Your favorite ‘just be silly’ song?

I need at least fifteen different responses, listing a song* under EACH category. I’ll make up ceedees from them, each with a theme, slap a stupid title like “Muffinass Music: Volume Angst” on them and spread the musical love around. People (hopefully) get to sample off some new tunes and I get to use pop psychoanalysis on the respondents. Whatchoo thank, mang?

If this project rolls smoothly enough (and, for the record, there are no guarantees on the time frame of it), I’d like to include quotes from different contributors/participants in lovingly hand-crafted liner notes. Ready, break!

….and oh yeah, if you get here and see fifteen suggestions already, go on and put yours down. As history has proven, I’ve no aversions to drawings conducted with a mess of giggling kids (“I’m part of something HUGE here! I’m playing God, I’m determining a fate.”….yeah, those middle-schoolers go apeshit with the notion of power) and a tupperware bowl present.

*Please include artists’ names and songs’ full, exact** titles.
**Okay, fairly exact.

    “do-me?”

I haven’t really gotten any, but Every Me and Every You by PLacebo is good to look at boys to.

    “Inspiring?”

    A Better Place by VAST

    “big wallow?”

Hated Because of Great Qualities by Blonde Redhead

    “rage?”

    Slackerbitch by Placebo

    “silly song?”

Rama Lama Dong Dong by Shanana

  2. Jett 8.29.2003

Kingolf, I love you and your songs. You’re WAY in.

  3. Leslie 8.29.2003

What’s your favorite ‘do-me’ song? Little Nicky – Prince

Which song buoys you up/inspires you? The Big Picture – Tori Amos

Which song evokes the ‘big wallow’ (heartbreak, regret, longing, all that hooey) in you? Evanescence – My Last Breath

When you rage, what’s the musical accompaniment? Rage Against the Machine of course!

  4. Leslie 8.29.2003

Oh it missed my last song..Something silly would be… Girl in a Box by the Blake Babies

  5. Kingolf 8.29.2003

    Woo!

Does this mean I’m finally superior?

I’ve been thinking of doing ‘mood cee dees’ for some time now… Nice to know that it actually WAS a good idea.

Soooo… can I do another one? Please?

  6. Gary 8.29.2003

Do me= When a Man Loves A Woman- Percy Sledge version. I get hard just thinking about dancing to than song.

Inspires me= God Bless the USA- Lee Greenwood

Big Wallow= I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry- Hank Williams. This is still the saddest song ever written in my opinion.

Rage= Foggy Mountain Breakdown- Flatt and Scruggs. Every time it was played in the movie Bonnie and Clyde people got shotgunned to death. Not too far removed from robbing liquor stores together is it Jett?

Just Be Silly= You Don’t Have To Call Me Darlin’- David Allen Coe. It contains the great line:

“I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison.”

  7. The Dane 8.29.2003

    do-me: A Housewife Love Song – Starflyer 59

The grinding throb of Starflyer’s tunes awaken an unmistakeably deep desire to, well, get it on (moreso than Marvin Gaye, I think).

buoys up/inspires: Comptine d’un Autre Ete: L’Apres Midi – Yann Tiersen

What can I say? This stirs the romantic side of me that twirls and flits and dances in the street. That is to say, the romantic side that Starflyer doesn’t reach. This particular piece from the Amelie soundtack inspires me thoughts to of giddiness, of frolicking, and of laying on a mountainside in a lush meadow on a patchwork blanket under a sunny, blue sky.

big wallow: Proprtion Thing – Havalina Rail Co.

My original thought was wrapped around Eve 6’s “Showerhead” as right around the time I was listening to it, there was some guy who was probably schtupping my soon-to-be-ex fiancee in the shower at that very moment. But as my angst matured, I soon developed a certain tragic affection for Matt Wignall’s woefully self-absorbed ode to personal inadequacy (and to the woman who’ll leave as its result).

rage: Nasty Habits – Oingo Boingo (preferably off their Halloween Farewell album)

When I think of rage, I think of evil and I think of energy and there is no sinister dynamo like Danny Elfman is a sinister dynamo.

just be silly: Love You Madly – Cake

“I don’t want to jump in

    Unless this music’s thumping.

All the dishes rattle in the cupboards

    When the elephants arrive.

I want to love you madly.”

Now don’t that just say “it all”?

  8. Patti 8.29.2003

    What’s your favorite ‘do-me’ song?

    Smooth – Santana / Supernatural

Which song buoys you up/inspires you?

Lean on Me – Bill Withers

Which song evokes the ‘big wallow’ (heartbreak, regret, longing, all that hooey) in you?

I Will Always Love You – Whitney “I’m not on crack” Houston

When you rage, what’s the musical accompaniment?

    Bitch – Meredith Brooks

Your favorite ‘just be silly’ song?

    Baby Beluga – Raffi

    (yes, I’m serious. heh.)

  9. Faith 8.29.2003

    Patti made me do it:

What’s your favorite ‘do-me’ song? Ottmar Liebert: Barcelona Nights

Which song buoys you up/inspires you? I’ll Stand By You by the Pretenders.

Which song evokes the ‘big wallow’ (heartbreak, regret, longing, all that hooey) in you? New York Minute by Don Henley

When you rage, what’s the musical accompaniment? Ironic by Alanis

Your favorite ‘just be silly’ song? Paradise By The Dashboard Light by Meatloaf

  10. the olive 8.29.2003

    What’s your favorite ‘do-me’ song?

    By your Side- Sade

Which song buoys you up/inspires you?

How Deep Is Your Love?-Jonatha Brooke

Which song evokes the ‘big wallow’ (heartbreak, regret, longing, all that hooey) in you?

    Hold On- Sarah Mclachlan

When you rage, what’s the musical accompaniment?

    Paperbag- Fiona Apple

Your favorite ‘just be silly’ song?

(I have it in the car- I’ll give it to you next week)

  11. the olive 8.29.2003

    She’s No Lady- Lyle Lovett

  12. The Dane 8.29.2003

I thought about “Paper Bag” myself, but not for the Rage category. More for the Big Wallow one. To be honest, I had a hard time pinning Rage down, since Rage just isn’t something I do. On the two times I can count having actually raged, a soundtrack would have been unsuitable. It would have stolen from the purity of my rage.

  13. Jett 8.29.2003

Ohhhh, you guys *claps hands wildly*…I love your picks!

I must apologize, because this narrow-it-down thing is MUCH hard.

My own picks, thus far, are:

rage: ‘Shit List’ by L7 (nosed out Jimmy Eat World’s ‘Get It Faster’ by only a smidge)

do me: ‘One Time Too Many’ by PJ Harvey

wallow: ‘For You Only’ by Alison Moyet

buoy is a tussle between a Wheatus song and an Eagles song so wonderfully thick with harmony that it just *may* win…

silly is looking like it just MIGHT be an Eazy-E joint….we shall see!

Funny, the people that I’d have thought would pop right up on this one have NOT. *shakes the woodwork* Then again, I’ve not checked my e-mail today, either.

  14. melly 8.29.2003

Reverend Horton Heat – One Time For Me

Paul Simon – Father and Daughter

When it comes to the crying shit, I cannot pick between Bob Dylan – Most of the Time and Simon and Garfunkel – Bookends

God, there’s also Richard Marx’s, “Angelia”.

The Cycle Sluts from Hell – I wish you were a beer.

Motley Crue – Girls, Girls, Girls

    In closing,

    “I know when you’re alone,

And you’re sure no one is there,

You got desire saying pump it pump it pump it pump it

    ’till you cum everwhere yeah!”

  15. melly 8.29.2003

Fuck woman. I was thinking about “Shitlist” too. Get. Out. Of. My. Head. Already.

  16. Do Me: ‘K.C. & The Sunshine Band – Jungle Boogy.’

Buoyancy: ‘Weezer – Suzanne’ OR ‘The Beatles – Good Day Sunshine’

Big Wallow: ‘Bob Marley – Is This Love?’ (Well… it was Bob. Not anymore…)

‘Rage: Against the Machine – Maggie’s Farm’ (a cover of the *classic* Bob Dylan song… when Zac de la Rocha does anything remotely related to Dylan it has to be genius) OR ‘Soundgarden – Pretty Noose’

Silly Song: ‘Benny Bell – Shaving Cream’ OR ‘Warren Zevon – Werewolves of London.’

  17. Georgette 8.30.2003

Do me: I’ve Got You Under My Skin by Diana Krall

Inspiring: From a Distance by Bette Midler. Never thought much of this song until I heard it done by the African Childrens Choir. It took on new meaning.

    Wallow: Remember by Harry Nillson

Rage: Go to Hell by Alice Cooper

  18. Georgette 8.30.2003

Leave it to me to forget one :)

Silly can only be: My Ding a Ling by Chuck Berry

  19. Chubby Momma 8.30.2003

    Better late than never…

    ‘do-me’ song?

For funky loving: Gett Off by Prince

For sexy lovin’ : Crash by Dave Matthews Band

Which song buoys you up/inspires you?

It is actually a live DMB song from a concert I was at that is Everyday/36 mixed together…

    ‘big wallow’?

    Somebody’s cryin’ by Chris Isaak

    rage?

Eminem… White America.. Lose Yourself.. Anything will do really.

Your favorite ‘just be silly’ song?

Can you say Barenaked Ladies? One week.

  20. Bob 8.30.2003

“Do-me”….Shelby Lynne….Just For the Touch Of Your Hand. My wife turned me on to Shelby, then I got turned on.

“Inspiration”….Garth Brooks…..The Change. I just love this guy, say what you will about the “aw, shucks ma’am” persona he has, he still puts out some good music(or..um, did).

“The Big Heartfuck”…..Vince Gill….Whenever You Come Around. I’m not an exclusive country music listener, but who does sad, heartbroken, cry in your beer-type music.

“Rage”….That’s a tough one to narrow down to one song, cuz’ I rage… alot. So much so that I am registered in 15 states as a danger to society. Medication seems to control the majority of it. Let me have two and I will keep it to a minimum, the rage that is. Limp Bizkit….Break Stuff….Metallica…Welcome Home(Sanitarium). Couple of good ones, but there are many, many more.

“Silly”… Any Oompa Loompa song from Willy Wonka And the Chocolate Factory. I’m a sucker for sweets.

There it is the “The List” from Bob…enjoy…. one and all.

  21. amy 9.1.2003

I’m a little late, but whatever.

Do-me song: The Most Wonderful Girl – Lords of Acid. There’s just something about the pulsing beat that makes me feel all sex-ay.

Buoying/Inspiring: Your Song/Elephant Love Medley – Moulin Rouge. Hearing them makes me all swoony and happy inside.

Big Wallow: I Want To Live – This Mortal Coil. Or The Jeweller. If you aren’t depressed before you start listening, you will be by the time the song’s over.

Rage: Violet – Hole. Say what you will about Courtney Love, she kicked some serious ass for about five minutes. Okay, four.

Silliness: Poison – Alice Cooper. It’s the cheesiest song ever, but in a good way. Alternate choice: Sidekick by Rancid. “I had a dream I was a vigilante sidekick/My name is Tim, I’m a lesser-known character.”

  22. Jett 9.1.2003

    I full-on LOVE ‘Sidekick’, Amy!

  27. Anonymous 9.2.2003

OK i’m a little late, but here are my answers:

    Favorite ‘do-me’ song?

“Say Goodbye” & “Crash Into Me” Dave Matthews (it’s a tie, can’t decide)

    Buoys you up/inspires you?

For love, “Luckiest” by Ben Folds, and a few others, but it really depends on what kind of inspiration I’m going for. Definitely “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen. Hell yeah.

‘Big wallow’ (heartbreak, regret, longing, all that hooey)?

(don’t laugh) “Shameless” and “The Dance” by Garth Brooks, “If I Could” by Regina Belle, “Say Goodbye” Dave Matthews Band and “Luckiest” by Ben Folds.

    Rage?

Moonlight Sonata – Beethoven or just plain silence. When I’m angry I don’t listen to music, usually.

    Just-Be-Silly song?

Three-way tie among: “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” Meatloaf, The Entire Rocky Horror Picture Show Soundtrack, Almost Any They Might Be Giants Song, and “Mack the Knife” “The Lady is a Tramp”, “Luck Be a Lady Tonight” and “Kick in the Head” by Sinatra

  29. Jett 9.3.2003

Nope, no ceedees yet; I’ll let everyone know when I get (at least) the first one done.

I’m thinking it’s gonna be titled,

It will be the wallow one.

Only keedengk. It will, of course, be the silly one.
