My mother used to partake –at times quite heavily– of The Evil Nicotine-Weed. When I would complain about her cigarette smoke literally draping itself about me, she would say, “Elizabeth, smoke follows beauty.” and laugh in her sweet way.
Lately I’ve come to understand how that saying came about: Smoke follows beauty because beauty burns and sets everything around it within barking distance on fire….or sets it, at least, to smoldering.
Surely I can’t be the only person to have ever entertained this notion.
